COVOX: first oxygen concentrator developed in Peru

COVOX is the first medical oxygen concentrator developed entirely in Peru, the result of collaboration between PUCP and DIACSA. The device uses PSA technology to deliver medical oxygen and was published in HardwareX Journal.

The context behind the project

During the second COVID-19 wave, oxygen prices rose sharply, hospitals were under pressure and remote communities struggled to access medical oxygen.

Role as a technology partner

DIACSA participated in firmware, electronic systems and PCB manufacturing for a device that combines pneumatic, electronic and mechanical subsystems.

What was achieved

Project result

COVOX offered a lower-cost local alternative, was published in HardwareX Journal and was evaluated for deployment in communities with limited access to oxygen.

Technical specifications

  • Oxygen concentrator developed entirely in Peru
  • Flow up to 15 liters per minute
  • Approximate purity of 93 +/- 3%
  • PSA technology (Pressure Swing Adsorption)
  • Nitrogen separation through zeolite towers
  • Integration of pneumatic, electronic and mechanical systems
  • Sensors for critical-variable monitoring
  • Screen interface for operation monitoring
  • Visual and audible alarms
  • Applicable to hospital or home environments

A Peruvian response to a national oxygen crisis, with local financing, scientific publication and social impact.

COVOX demonstrates how local engineering, academia and national funding can create practical medical technology with international validation.
